In public spaces, there’s a certain type of person who doesn’t need fancy tools, just curious eyes, the right timing, and someone in front of them unlocking a phone. These are the “silent snoops” who catch a glimpse of your passcode like it’s a free spy mission on the sidewalk.

But there’s a smart, boldly simple solution:

Get a privacy screen protector

This small accessory doesn’t just protect your screen from scratches; it shields your private activity from wandering eyes. Whether you’re on a train or at a café, it turns your display into a blank screen from the side. And nothing annoys snoopers more than a screen that hides its secrets. Suddenly, you look like you’re hiding state-level intel, when really, it’s just a WhatsApp message that says, “Where are you? I’m starving.”

Wondering if someone’s peeked at your phone?

iPhones have a helpful tool called App Activity in Screen Time settings. It shows which apps were opened, when, and for how long, even while you were away.

Noticed your photo app opened, and you didn’t touch it? Think about who was near your phone last.

More ways to protect your screen (and your secrets):

  • Turn on Lockdown Mode to limit data access in case of a threat

  • Use Siri Shortcuts to send an alert or message if your phone is moved while locked

  • Lock sensitive apps like Mail and Photos behind Face ID only

A real story from the UK:

In May 2024, British Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Johnny Mercer had confidential information leaked during a train ride. A nearby passenger snapped a photo of his laptop screen, which displayed a private internal memo accusing senior officials. The image later surfaced in local media and triggered national concern about information security, even among high-ranking government figures.

This incident highlights the dangers of "shoulder surfing", when someone steals info with just a glance at your screen.

It’s a powerful reminder: even everyday moments deserve digital caution. Your phone might look like just another device…But in reality, it’s the key to your entire life.
